Kurebe Shrine

〒770-0928 徳島県徳島市二軒屋町2丁目48

4.2(144)

A Shikinaisha (shrine listed in the Engishiki) located in Tokushima City, enshrining Amaterasu-hiko-no-mikoto, the ancestral deity of the Awa Kurebe clan.

History

This shrine is the successor to a Meishin Daija (Great Shrine of Famous Deities). Its former official rank was Kokubei Chusha (National Shrine of Middle Rank), and it is currently designated as a Hyakubansha (Special Table Shrine). During the Meiji era, after debates over its location, the current site on the mid-slope of Mount Biwasan was selected in 1885, and the deities were moved there in 1892. Major buildings were destroyed by wartime bombing in 1945 (Showa 20) but were rebuilt in 1953 (Showa 28).
