Hiden-in Temple
京都市東山区泉涌寺山内町35
A temple belonging to the Sen-ongu-ji branch of the Shingon sect, it serves as a Tato (a subsidiary temple) of the head temple, Sen-ongu-ji. It houses a seated statue of the Crowned Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha), traditionally attributed to the sculptor Kaikei.
History
Founded in 1308 CE (Kenkei 1) by the monk Mujin Nyodo, it is said to have taken over the site of the former Sai Hiden-in. It was designated as a Chogon-ji (a temple receiving imperial patronage) by Emperor Go-Hanazono, and its successive abbots have been granted permission to wear the purple robe (Shie) when visiting the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. In 1645 CE (Shoho 2), it accepted the patronage of Nagamasa Nagai and relocated to its current location. In 1885, it merged with the Sen-ongu-ji subsidiary temple, Jumyo-in.
