It is said to have been discovered by Gyoki and established by Bodhisena by imperial decree from Emperor Shomu. It was later rebuilt by imperial decree from Emperor Toba and given a mountain name by Emperor Go-Hakuryo and Minamoto no Yoritomo. During the Heian period, it was protected by the Fujiwara regent families, and from the Kamakura to Muromachi periods, it was protected by the Sakaegawa Oe clan. In the Edo period, it possessed the largest number of Goshuin (shrine/temple seal stamps) in the Tohoku region.
