Founded in 1196 CE (Kenkyu 7) by Nitta Yoshikane. It was re-established in 1401 CE (Oei 8) by Choyo. During the Edo period, it was designated as a resting place for the Shogun's visits to Nikko shrines, establishing a relationship with the shogunate.
