Situated on a high ground that was formerly the site of Sasashita Castle, the temple is known for its 'Kata-mi no Maki' tree and its mountain gate (sanmon), which was relocated from the former residence of the Maehashi clan.

Originally a Hosso-shu (Yogacara) temple, it converted to Jodo Shinshu in 1214 when the resident priest, Yugen Ho-in, became a disciple of Shinran. Later, it received the temple name 'Jusei-bo' from Rennyo and the mountain name 'Baika-zan' from Ryo-nyo. It has been called 'Jusei-in' since 1954. The temple declined following a fire in 1849 but was rebuilt in 1890 by Hanazono Kenjo.
