History
建久5年に九条兼実が仏師・快慶に作らせた釈迦如来と阿弥陀如来の像を別邸に祀ったことに始まり、正治3年に九条道家が開基し、証空を招いて寺院として整備された。南北朝時代から明治維新まで宮中の仏事を司る御黒戸四箇院の一つであったが、羽柴秀吉による方広寺大仏殿建立計画に伴い移転の危機に瀕した。明治元年に廃仏毀釈により廃絶されたが、大正3年に浄土宗西山禅林寺派の寺院として再興された。
