It is said to have been founded in 646 CE (Taika 2) by the hermit Hodo. Later, Kukai enshrined a statue of Maya, which led to the mountain being named Mount Maya. During the Edo period, it was designated as a protective temple for Settsu Province by Tokugawa Iemitsu and was widely revered by imperial family members and military commanders. Although the temple was completely destroyed by a fire in 1976, it has since been rebuilt on Maya Betsuzan (a separate peak of Mount Maya).
