As the head temple of the Maya San Shingon sect, this is the only temple in Japan that enshrines Maya, the biological mother of the Buddha, as its principal image.

History

It is said to have been founded in 646 CE (Taika 2) by the hermit Hodo. Later, Kukai enshrined a statue of Maya, which led to the mountain being named Mount Maya. During the Edo period, it was designated as a protective temple for Settsu Province by Tokugawa Iemitsu and was widely revered by imperial family members and military commanders. Although the temple was completely destroyed by a fire in 1976, it has since been rebuilt on Maya Betsuzan (a separate peak of Mount Maya).

Blessings

The temple is particularly popular among women, and it is said to be the first in Japan to perform prayers for safe childbirth and to bestow abdominal sashes (hara-obi) for pregnant women.

What visitors say

Located at a high elevation on the mountain, this temple offers stunning views and changing scenery throughout the four seasons. The dry landscape garden and well-maintained temple grounds are beautiful, and on certain seasons, visitors can see butterflies such as the Asagi Madara (a type of swallowtail butterfly) fluttering about. There is a dedicated parking lot, and the surrounding environment is well-organized.
