Sairyobasho Dai Genmiya (Sairyobasho Grand Head Shrine)

京都市左京区吉田神楽岡町30

4.3(129)

A subsidiary shrine of Yoshida Shrine and a designated Important Cultural Property. It was established as a base for Yoshida Shinto (Yuiitsu Shinto, or the Shinto of the One) to enshrine Kyomu Taigen Sonshin (the Supreme Deity of the Void and the Great Origin), the root deity of the universe.

History

Founded in 1484 CE (Bunmei 16) during the late Muromachi period by Yoshida Kanki as a base for Yoshida Shinto within the grounds of Yoshida Shrine. The main enshrined deity, Kyomu Taigen Sonshin, was transferred from his private residence. The shrine also enshrines the Tenjin Chigi Hachimanbaku Daijin (the Great Deities of the Heavenly and Earthly Divinities, numbering eight million) and deities from across the country, which were generated by the power of the main deity. It served as the center of worship for Yoshida Shrine until the Meiji era, but is now treated as one of its subsidiary shrines.
