Originally established as a subsidiary shrine within the grounds of Jozan-ji Temple, its origins date back to the enshrinement of a statue of Sugawara no Michizane in 1263 CE (Kochō 3). In 1665 CE (Kanbun 5), the deity from Kitano Tenmangu was invited to be enshrined here, and it became a site for prayers by the Maeda clan. The shrine was relocated to its current site in 1708 CE (Hōei 5) and renamed Uota Shrine in 1873 CE (Meiji 6).
