4.3(1072)

A Tendaishu sect temple located in Izumi City, Osaka Prefecture, known as the 4th station of the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. Situated on the mountainside of Mount Makio (elevation 600 meters), it has been selected as one of Osaka's 100 Best Green Spaces.

History

It is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoman of Kakogun, Harima Province during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. Originally a temple associated with Shugendo (mountain asceticism), it has a temple history titled 'Makiozan Dai Engi' (Great Origin of Mount Makio) dating back to the Nanbokucho period. During the medieval period, the monk Gyohen of Ninna-ji Temple established the Kanto-do (Baptism Hall). Local legends also claim that Kukai took his monastic vows in this area and that En no Gyobu buried a copy of the Lotus Sutra here, which is said to be the origin of the place name.
