In 752 CE (Tenpyo-Shoho 4), the divine spirit was invited from Usa Jingu (Usa Grand Shrine), and the shrine was established as Kume Hachiman-gu. The shrine underwent repeated reconstructions and renovations by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the Kono clan, and the lords of the Matsuyama Domain. During the Meiji period, it transitioned from a Kosha (village shrine) to a Kensha (prefectural shrine).
