History
It is said to have been founded during the lifetime of Sugawara no Michizane. When Michizane was exiled, the local magistrate Tobe Genzo enshrined a statue of Michizane, marking the shrine's origin. In 901 CE (Engi 1), when Michizane was exiled, Tobe Genzo was entrusted with the care of Michizane's eighth son, Keinou. He built a small shrine within his residence and enshrined Michizane as a living deity (Ikimi). In 1653 CE (Joo 2), the first lord of Sonobe Domain, Koide Yoshichika, relocated the shrine to its current site when constructing the Sonobe Government Office.
