Nichiren-shu Ichiraku-zan Seiun-ji (Ichiraku-zan Seiun-ji Temple of the Nichiren School)

伊豆市土肥644

4.1(78)

A temple of the Nichiren school with the mountain name Ichiraku-zan. It is considered the central temple of the Ikegami sect on the Izu Peninsula.

History

It was established as the family temple of the Toyonaga family, who were the lords of Takaya Castle in this area during the Sengoku period. In the great fire of Dogi Village in 1703 CE (Genroku 16), the entire mountain was burned, but the original appearance was restored in 1832 CE (Tenpō 3). The temple declined during the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement in the Meiji era, but was revived in the Taisho era. Maintenance and improvements have continued since the Shōwa era.

What visitors say

The main hall displays 90 panel paintings depicting the life of Nichiren Daishonin, offering a compelling visual experience. Within the temple grounds, a steep flight of 77 stone steps leads to the Shichimen-do (Seven-Faced Hall), lined with figurines indicating the twelve zodiac signs and unlucky years. Goshuin (shrine or temple calligraphic seal stamps) are available at the office, and a couple's cherry tree blooms on the arched bridge.
