History
Founded in 865 CE (Jogan 7) by So-o, a monk of Enryaku-ji known as the originator of the Senjitsu Eho-gyo. In 882 CE (Ganko 6), it became a Tendai sect branch temple by imperial decree from Emperor Yokei. The complex was completely destroyed by fire during Oda Nobunaga's burning of Mount Hiei but was rebuilt during the Tensho period (1573–1592). It has since undergone repeated destruction by fire and subsequent reconstruction.
