In 1646 CE (Shoho 3), Matsui Okinaga, the chief vassal (shoshu karō) of the Kumamoto Domain, entered Yatsushiro Castle. At that time, he reorganized the then-existing Taisōin and established it as the family temple for the Matsui clan. It is a branch temple (matsuji) of the Nanzen-ji school of the Rinzai Zen sect.
