History
The shrine is said to have been founded in 809 CE (Dōtō 4). Its origin is attributed to the appearance of an old man with white hair riding a white deer, who was regarded as an incarnation of the Great Deity of Kasuga. During the medieval period, it prospered under the patronage of the Ōtomo clan. However, most of the shrine buildings were burned down by Ōtomo Yoshinori, a Christian daimyo. The shrine was later rebuilt and became a local shrine (Kyōsha) during the Meiji era. Currently, 13 buildings within the shrine grounds are registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
