The shrine is said to have been founded in 809 CE (Dōtō 4). Its origin is attributed to the appearance of a white-haired elder riding a white deer, who was regarded as an incarnation of Kasuga Daimyōjin (the Great Deity of Kasuga). During the medieval period, it flourished under the patronage of the Ōtomo clan. However, most of the shrine buildings were burned down by Ōtomo Yoshishige, a daimyō who had converted to Christianity. The structures were gradually rebuilt thereafter, and the shrine was designated as a Gōsha (a shrine of local importance) during the Meiji era.
