The shrine originated from a Kasuga shrine invited to the Futada shoen estate, which was under the jurisdiction of the Kasuga Shrine in Yamato Province. When Hoshina Masayoshi entered Awa Province, the shrine was relocated to its current site at the foot of Mount Otaki. It has a history of being welcomed as the guardian shrine of Tokushima Castle. Since the Keicho period, it has been referred to as 'Kasuga Daimyojin' and received reverence from successive feudal lords. In the 6th year of Meiji (1873), it was renamed to its current name and designated as a Kensha (prefectural shrine).
