Founded in 860 CE (Jogan 2) when Fujiwara no Kazunori invited the kami from Kasuga Taisha in Yamato Province. During the Kamakura period, it was revived by the Otomo clan and revered as the head shrine of the Bungo region. It was elevated to the rank of a prefectural shrine in the Meiji era. Although the shrine buildings were destroyed in the Oita air raid of 1945 CE (Showa 20), they were rebuilt in 1967 CE (Showa 42).
