According to temple tradition, the origins date back to 752 CE (Tenpyo Shoho 4), when Daishi Ho-on (Master of Gratitude) practiced on Mount Ryuo to pray for the recovery of Emperor Koken from illness. During this practice, he experienced the spiritual efficacy of Saisho Daijinga Bosatsu (the Great King Bodhisattva of the Highest Merit). Around 785 CE (Enryaku 4), a prayer site was established at the foot of Mount Ryuo. In 1601 CE (Keicho 6), Hanafusa Shokuhide invited Nichiren Shonin to re-establish the site as a Nichiren sect temple named Inariyama Myogyoji. Even during the Meiji era's separation of Shinto and Buddhism, this unique form of syncretic worship was exceptionally permitted to continue.
