A temple of the Chizan-ha branch of Shingon Buddhism, also known as the 'Koyasan of the West.' It houses one of Japan's largest three-story pagodas and the Buddha's Nirvana painting, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property. It is also the 77th station of the Kyushu 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
History
Established in 1607 by Matsura Shigenobu, the first lord of Hizen-Hakata Domain. Shigenobu burned down Shonoin, a temple located on a site traditionally said to be where Kukai performed a Goma fire ritual, and rebuilt this temple. Since Shigenobu, the temple has received the devotion of successive lords of the Matsura clan, who have donated many temple treasures.
