A Jodo-shu (Pure Land) temple known as the burial ground of the Matsudaira clan, the lords of the Matsue Domain. It is also popularly known as the 'Ajisai Temple' (Hydrangea Temple) due to the large number of tourists who visit during the hydrangea blooming season.
History
In 1664, Matsudaira Naomasa revived the temple as a place to enshrine the memorial tablet of his biological mother, the late Princess Getsushoin. He established the Jodo-shu monk Cho-yu as the founding priest and renamed the temple 'Mongaku-zan Getsusho-ji' (Moonlight Illumination Temple on Mount Mongaku). The second domain lord, Tsunataka, followed his father's last will to build a mausoleum within the temple grounds and changed the mountain name to the current 'Kanki-zan' (Joyful Mountain). The site subsequently served as the burial ground for domain lords up to the ninth generation. In 1996, it was designated as a National Historic Site.
