History
The founding date is unknown, though it is said to date back to the Wado era. The Shimazu clan and Yoshida family made donations that led to the relocation of the shrine buildings and the acquisition of divine ranks. After suffering damage from a volcanic eruption in 1779 CE (An'ei 8), rituals such as Kagura (sacred dance) were instituted to appease the divine will. Another eruption in 1914 CE (Taisho 3) buried sacred treasures, and the shrine was relocated to its current buildings in 1940 CE (Showa 15).
