The date of founding is unknown, but records indicate that the main hall, torii gate, and other structures were rebuilt in 1152 CE. The shrine was destroyed by fire during a military conflict in 1578 CE and was rebuilt in 1622 CE. After being completely burned down in a fire in 1947 CE, it was restored in 1961 CE using shrine buildings relocated from Toyokuni Shrine.
