According to tradition, the shrine was founded in 672 CE by inviting the deity from Izanagi Jingu (Izanagi Grand Shrine) on Awaji Island. Since the Edo period, it has been revered as the tutelary deity of the Tanabe Domain townspeople and is considered one of the eleven shrines of Tango Province. The old shrine buildings were destroyed in a great fire in 1732 CE (Kyōhō 17), but the current structures were rebuilt in 1744 CE (Genbun 9).
