History
Nichiryu founded Honnyoji in 1415 CE (Eiyo 22). It was later rebuilt with the support of Koshoriya Sogaku, and the temple's name was changed to Honno-ji. During the late medieval period, it flourished as one of the 21 Lotus Sutra temples in Kyoto, but was destroyed by fire during the Tenbun Lotus Sutra Rebellion. It was revived at its current location during the era of Nichijo. Following the Honno-ji Incident, it was relocated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and rebuilt by its followers.
