According to tradition, Shinran, the founder of Jōdo Shinshū, established the temple in 1225 CE (Karakitsu 1) at the earnest request of the lord of Moka Castle. It later received an imperial edict designating it as a temple under imperial patronage from Emperor Go-Horikawa and served as a key base for Shinran's missionary activities. The temple complex was rebuilt during the Edo period. To this day, it remains the only temple attributed to Shinran's founding and enshrines the Amida Sanzō (the Three Buddhas of Amida) in the style of Senkō-ji as its principal image.
