文禄四年（1595年）に寿明院日慶上人が神田に土地を拝領して創建された。慶安二年（1649年）に谷中に移り、元禄二年（1689年）に現在地へ移転した。日蓮宗京都本圀寺の末寺であり、山号は妙栄山である。
