On August 1, 1283 CE (Kōan 6), during the Mongol invasions, Amakusa Daifuku Ōzō Taishi, who achieved military merit under the protection of Suwa Daimyōjin (the Great Deity of Suwa), enshrined a branch spirit (bunrei) from Suwa Grand Shrine to found this shrine. After the shrine was destroyed by fire during the Shimabara and Amakusa Rebellions, it was relocated to its current vicinity in 1643 CE (Kan'ei 20). It was later classified as a village shrine (kyōsha) in the early Meiji period and elevated to the status of a prefectural shrine (kensha) in 1945 CE (Shōwa 20).
