After the conclusion of the Battle of Ishiyama Hongan-ji, Muneshige returned to his hometown in Fukui and established the temple, marking the origin of Honkoji. In the early Taisho period, to facilitate the education and evangelism of followers who had relocated to Tokyo, the temple moved to its current location in 1931.
