文禄四年(1595)に幕府より寺地を拝顔して創建され、太田康資の娘・英勝院が開基となった。天和二年(1682)に現在の深川大工町に移転し、江戸時代には浄土宗の触頭の一つであった。明治時代に江戸崎大念寺より檀林号が移り、昭和元年まで檀林格であった。
