Honganji Kagoshima Betsuin (Kagoshima Branch of Honganji)
〒892-0842 鹿児島県鹿児島市東千石町21−38
A branch temple directly under the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha sect located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is affectionately known locally as the "West Honganji." The Kagoshima District Administrative Office is also located on the premises.
History
The branch temple was established in 1878 (Meiji 11) by acquiring the current site and relocating the Seioji temple from Kishu. The main hall and other structures were completely destroyed by fire during the Kagoshima Great Air Raid in 1945 (Shōwa 20). The current fourth-generation main hall was rebuilt in 1982 (Shōwa 57). Within the temple grounds, a stone monument called the "Tear Stone" is enshrined, symbolizing the history of the suppression of Nembutsu (Buddhist chanting).
