In 1884 (Meiji 17), Mr. Mizuno Genjiro, a former samurai of the Kurume Domain, enshrined a branch spirit (bunrei) from the head shrine, Kurume Suitengu in Kyushu, at Minami 2-jo Nishi 4-chome in Sapporo. In 1888 (Meiji 21), the shrine buildings were constructed at the current location. In 1952 (Showa 27), after the end of World War II, it affiliated with the Association of Shinto Shrines and became recognized as one of the 39 branch shrines in Japan.
