In 1879 (Meiji 12), rituals were held to enshrine the spirits of Tonanhei soldiers who died in battle or from illness during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 (Meiji 10). In 1907 (Meiji 40), the shrine relocated to Nakajima Park and began jointly enshrining those who died in the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. In 1939 (Showa 14), it was designated as a Gokoku Shrine (patriotic shrine) by the Ministry of Home Affairs. In 1946 (Showa 21), it was renamed Sapporo Shotoku Shrine.
