History
Traditionally founded in 749 CE (Tenpyō Shōhō 1) by the monk Gyōki. During the Edo period, it was a branch temple of the Yūzū Nenbutsu-shu sect. Following the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement in the modern era, it came under the jurisdiction of Chion-in and converted to the Jodo-shu sect. The old main hall, built during the Bunka-Bunsei era, was rebuilt in 1996.
