The 18th head of the Ouchi clan, Ouchi Masanari, established the temple, and it was founded in 1501 CE (Bunmei 1) by the monk Monchu Bon'ei. It has stood on this site for over 500 years since the Sengoku period. In 1639, the lord of the Fuchuu domain used the temple to host the Kumamoto domain lord. It is said that before a fire in 1688, the temple was vast and beautiful.
