萩藩三代藩主の毛利吉就公が創設した黄檗宗の寺院。境内の総門、三門、鐘楼、大雄宝殿が国指定重要文化財である。

毛利家の菩提寺であり、国の重要文化財である総門や大雄宝殿、多数の石灯籠が並ぶ墓所など、荘厳な景観が広がります。境内は静謐で歴史の重みを感じられる雰囲気があり、巨大な木製の魚の展示も見どころです。拝観料は300円で、入口付近に駐車場も整備されています。
