History
Founded on the land of Sengatani (the former residence of Ota Dōgon), which was bestowed by Tokugawa Iemitsu, with Koryō-hime (Gyohō Seiin), daughter of Tokugawa Yoritomo, as the first founding abbot. Because the abbesses of each generation were princesses of the Mito domain, the temple was also known as the 'Mito Palace.' Since the Meiji Restoration, priests have been invited from the Matsudaira family and Aoyama Zenkoji. Although it suffered significant damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake, it was rebuilt on the original foundation stones through a reconstruction effort by volunteers.
