Higashimuki Kannonji Temple

Founded in 806 CE (Enryaku 25) by order of Emperor Kanmu, it was established by Fujiwara no Kogokumaro and the monk Kenkei. It previously served as the Jingūji for Kitano Tenmangū. In 961 CE (Ōwa 1), an Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, attributed to the personal creation of Sugawara no Michizane, was brought in as the principal image. In 1311 CE (Ōchō 1), it was reorganized as a Ritsu-in (a monastery for the study of monastic discipline) of the Shingon Izumi-ji branch and revived by the monk Muzon Nyodō.
