Originally founded as San-yuin to commemorate the late Hoshikawa Takakuni, the regent of the Muromachi shogunate. In 1556 CE (Koji 2), it was relocated within the Myoshin-ji grounds by Yamana Toyokuni and re-established as a sub-temple, at which time it was renamed Tourin-in. It subsequently served as the family temple for the Yamana clan. In the late Edo period, the main hall and storehouses were rebuilt by Yamana Yoshifusa.
