Tohozan Shinpukuji
鈴鹿市神戸2丁目19−8
A Buddhist temple of the Shingon Hyossan-ha sect, enshrining Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) as its principal image. Within the temple grounds stands a large weeping ginkgo tree over 350 years old.
History
Tradition holds that the temple was founded in the third month of the second year of the Eiroku era (1559 CE) by the priest Ho-in Shojo. At that time, it was known as Shinfukuji. It flourished as a prayer temple for Oda Nobutaka, but was destroyed by fire during a major earthquake in the Edo period. It was renamed Shinpukuji during the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement at the beginning of the Meiji era.
