In Bunsei 6 (1823 CE), Kiyomasa Hisamatsu established a temporary shrine at the Yamaage Kido gate of Matsuyama Castle and invited the spirit of Minamoto no Sadatoshi. In Tenpo 8 (1837 CE), the shrine was granted the title Shinonome Reishin, and the shrine building was constructed on Choja-ga-oka Hill within the castle grounds. It was renamed Shinonome Shrine in Meiji 13 (1880 CE). After being destroyed by wartime fires in Showa 20 (1945 CE), it was rebuilt in Showa 48 (1973 CE).
