The date of its founding is unknown, but it has long been revered as the Ujigami of the Iitaka clan, who served as provincial governors. In 1588 (Tensho 16), when Gamu Ujisue built Matsuzaka Castle, Hachiman (the war god) was enshrined together as the guardian deity of the castle, and it was known as 'Mishiro Hachiman' until the Edo period. During the Meiji era, it was renamed Ibi Shrine, and in 1908, neighboring shrines and deities were merged into it to form the current Matsusaka Shrine.
