History
Founded in 1024 CE (Manju 1) by imperial decree of Emperor Go-Ichijo, it was established as the Kashiwabara Branch Palace of Tanba Province to enshrined a branch spirit from Ishizuchi Hachimangu. The shrine buildings were repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt due to fires during the Nanbokucho period and invasions by Akechi Mitsuhide. The current main hall (honden) and worship hall (haiden) were constructed in 1585 CE (Tensho 13) by Horio Yoshiharu under orders from Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During the Meiji era, it was elevated to the rank of a prefectural shrine, and its buildings are designated as Important Cultural Properties.

What visitors say
Situated on Mount Irifune, the shrine buildings and three-story pagoda are located at the top of a stone staircase. Many subsidiary shrines line the grounds, and flowers sometimes float in the water purification basin (temizuya). The mountain path is well-maintained, offering a quiet, nature-rich atmosphere with sunlight filtering through the trees. Nearby cafes and wagashi (traditional sweet) shops make it accessible for visits on foot.
