In 1664 CE (Kanbun 4), Tokugawa Mitsumoto established 'Seiryo-an' on the site of the Senbon Matsubara execution ground, with Seikoin's ninth patriarch, Ninku Kashin, as the founder. In 1685 CE (Joho 2), the name was changed to 'Eikokuji'. It is said that the main seated statue of Amida Buddha was transferred from Yakushi-ji, a branch temple of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei.
