History
The temple's origins trace back to 1130, when Kakuho, a monk from Mount Koya during the late Heian period, founded Kodaiin. In 1131, by imperial decree from Emperor Toba, the name was changed to Daidaiin. Following the Suiwari Rebellion in 1140, the base was moved from Mount Koya to Hoofukuji and Enmeiji within the Honga Estate, forming the collective name Nerazaji. By the late Muromachi period, it had become a major religious city with a monastic military force. In 1585, during the Kishu Campaign, it was burned down by the army of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
