Its origins are said to date back to the reign of Emperor Keiko, when Mikumo-wake ordered the enshrinement of Amatsuhiko-no-Mikoto at Ise-bu-oka. It was initially known as Ise-bu Myojin. In 1186 CE (Bunji 2), Kiryu Tsunamoto repaired the shrine buildings. In 1350 CE (Kannin 1), a branch deity was transferred from Kitano Tenmangu, and the shrine became Tenmangu. During the Edo period, it served as the general guardian shrine for 54 villages in the Kiryu domain and as a place of prayer for the Tokugawa family.
