創建年代は不詳ながら、天安年（857-858）に北野威徳天神を奉斎し、梅坪の天神と称したと伝えられます。鎌倉時代には富所左衛門同左近将監が社殿を再建し、江戸期には梅坪の鎮守として祀られていました。文化8年（1811）には地内の子守明神社（及び相殿の兜明神）を合祀しています。
