The shrine's origins date back to 869 CE (Jogan 11), when Susanoo-no-Mikoto was enshrined during an epidemic. The shrine buildings were established in 934 CE (Johei 4). During the Bunroku period (1593–1596), the shrine was relocated to its current site at Hanawadaidai, after which Ukanomitama-no-Kami and Izanami-no-Mikoto were jointly enshrined. In 1987 (Showa 62), the shrine changed its name from Yasaka Shrine to Kamikawachi Shrine.
