During the medieval period, it became a center for Shugendo (mountain asceticism). In 1935, it was designated as the head shrine, 'Chiji Sarutahiko Daihonmiya,' for approximately 2,000 shrines across Japan that enshrine Sarutahiko Okami. It is also considered the birthplace of the Shishi-mai (lion dance).
